My life continues...and a Monday blog challenge

It's about time I posted something here, considering I've been working on my template and such for the last week or so. My first post...aaahhhh!

If you'd like to check out the last four or five years of my blogging life, you can go to http://www.xanga.com/kaylind.

In a nutshell for those who don't know me, I'm a 24-year-old "college student for life." I'm teaching and finishing up my Master's Degree in Communication here in good ole' Cincinnati. I may go on to get my PhD eventually, but with or without it I want to teach in a college or university. I like the college students...no sassy attitudes or trouble-making, and they're actually paying to be there (well, someone's paying), hence I'll be in college the rest of my life. I also like the time off that teaching allows. Right now I'm on a month-long Christmas break. It doesn't get better than that! I also love what I'm studying. Most people are like "OH, you're in communications, so you're going to be on TV right?" Ha, no not really, but good try! While I have nothing against mass communication, I'm more into the interpersonal and family aspects...the theories and studies on how people communicate with each other, how they handle conflicts and tensions, and how communication in relationships develops and changes over time. There's obviously more to it than that, but mmmm it's wonderful to me.

Other than that, I started getting into digital scrapping a few months ago and I'm in love with it! I've been a paper scrapper since about 2000, and I've really only finished two books - one for myself, and one for someone else. I've always loved embellishments, but they always seemed so expensive to me that I would only buy ones I knew I would use on certain pages. Being in grad school didn't help the scrapping cause either, since I had NO time to sit at my scrapping table and put together even one layout a week. Digital is so awesome, I don't think I've even made 10 layouts yet, but I've made more in two months than I ever did with paper. And my need for instant gratification is being well-feed too, ha! The boyfriend can vouch for that one!

The first Monday blog challenge at The Digichick last week wanted us to explain why we scrap...so here goes. Ever since I was younger and my dad brought home a document about one of his ancestors I've been into the family tree stuff. I thought it was so cool that you could trace your family back and find the stories within. However, I never did have the time or connections to find out how the family tree branched, and there was so much information missing. In 2000, when I took a vacation to California after graduation, I really wanted to take my pictures and put them in some kind of album. I've never liked photo albums because they're so plain, so I took my first dive into some scrapping. I only used paper, but cut some different shapes and used the wavy scissors and such, and I really liked the end result. I've come a long way since then, but I'd say that I scrap for a combination of these reasons...because I want to tell my stories to my family, friends, kids and future generations, and because I want a way to display my events and stories that's graphically pleasing to my artsy self. I also do crafts and such for gifts, so scrapping added one more tool into my toolbox of gift making. :)

Anyways, now that my nutshell is getting long and boring, the rest of my life consists of:
  • my wonderful boyfriend Dan
  • some shopping here and there
  • a fetish for electronics and computer stuff
  • organizing, or trying to, like there's no tomorrow...calendars, lists (as you can see), organizing files and papers for teaching, you name it...
  • trying to spend time with my family without going crazy
  • trying to work on my Master's paper, without success because of my newfound digiscrapping fetish
  • listening to an 18-year-old brother who plays the drums in his own metal band
  • who knows what else...
I think that's it for my first post here at the blogspot. Until next time...
